ORGANIZATIONAL PROFILE:

RWICOD was formed in 2002 when 5 female community development activists came together with the idea of an organization. The initial strategy was to create a small micro finance project involving a revolving fund. With the entry of new members, notably 2 male helpers, the organization was transformed into a multi-faceted entity seeking to work solutions for a broad spectrum of development issues.

CURRENT ACTIVITIES:

Currently we are engaged in the following activities:

-Lhuyira (Lhukonzo) language documentation and dissemination Lhuyira language, a medium of communication for over 5 million people living in parts of western Uganda and North Kivu, Eastern Congo (DRC) has never been properly documented for generations. We intend to develop the language to perpetuate its integrity and save it from naturalization into other languages notably Kiswahili in Congo and other Bantu languages in Uganda.

-Adult Literacy  We are striving to promote adult literacy in the region. A large percentage of the population in the Rwenzori area, with of course women being the majority do not have even the basic reading and writing skills. The inability to read and write has far reaching negative implications ranging from domestic quarrels to propagation of poverty due to the inability to properly, budget their income.

-Tailoring Project  We are currently conducting a little tailoring training for interested members in our organization.

PROJECTS FOR WHICH WE ARE CURRENTLY SEEKING SUPPORT/FUNDRAISING

We are in the process of fundraising for the following projects;

  • Bee keeping project for alternative agriculture and income projects.
  • Cyber cafe project for information access to empower women and other people of the Rwenzori region.
  • Micro finance project. We intend to raise the capital we would use in a revolving fund. This would use as a revolving fund.
  • A small pilot irrigation project to attempt to overcome the perpetual drought of the Kasese area.
  • Promotion of aquaculture ( breeding of fish)
  • Trainings in:

              . Use and development of appropriate technology

             Peaceful existence between man and nature. (This targets people living near protected areas-game parks who do a lot of poaching and in the process they are often killed there by game wardens).

GEOGRAPHICAL COVERAGE

Our programs currently focus on the Rwenzori region (mainly the region on the slopes of Mount Rwenzori). This region covers the districts of Kasese, Kabarole and Bundibugyo in Uganda. We have an interest to expand into the North Kivu province of Congo (DRC) just on the slopes of Mt Rwenzori.
